Night Photography
Night photography really interest me. I haven't been able to take good photos at night. I was able to find this tutorial about shooting at night from Canadian Geographic. Helpful, can't wait to try it out.
Self Portrait
I'm going to shoot my self portrait this weekend. I have some ideas, but I found these tips from DPS(digital photography school) that helped. I really need to show different sides of myself. This is a challenge for me because I really don't let people in. I am looking forward to the opportunity.
2009 W.Eugene Smith
Lu Guang wins the W. Eugene Smith Grant for a four year project on the effects of pollution in his native country, China. I had no idea things were that bad over there. His images really bring new light to their situation. He is using the 30,000 grant to travel more and spread the knowledge more. Amazing images that really capture the damage industrial companies are doing. Read more.

Desire
Just found this interview from 1996. Charlie Rose interviews Roy DeCarava. Decarava talks about his desire not technique for photography.
Remembering DeCarava
I was sadded to hear that Roy DeCarava has died. DeCarava was an amazing photographer, his jazz photos are some of my all time favorites. I first took notice of him because he had a book, The Sweet Fly Paper of Life, which he had wrote with Langston Hughes, I love reading anything by Hughes. Both of them made others see what Harlem was all about. A truly inspirational photographer and master of his craft. Click to read the article announcing his death.
Pinhole Camera
So I finally started my pinhole camera. I'm making it out of an old tin I have. Here is an image from The Pinhole Gallery. I'm sure Ill run into problems along the way. It so cool to see some of the images my classmates have been able to take with their pinholes.

In New York
How exciting would it be to live in New York city. You would get to go to openings every night if you wanted to. Not to say Atlanta doesn't celebrate photography, ACP, its just different in NYC. This article I read on Interviews website talks about how an auctioneer, Simon de Pury for Phillips de Pury & Company was able to showcase his own photography. Interesting work.
Helpful Peer
One of my classmates is an amazing photographer, Trent Chau. Everyday in class he is always willing to help me with any questions I may have. I enjoy reading his blog as well. Check out his work.
Darkroom
I had a frustrating lab day today. I have to re shoot my 36 subject because a cemetery is to broad, they turned out great though. I had some extra time to print some for me. So I'm thinking about maybe doing a old suitcase or a tractor. Its a rainy day so no shooting today.

Pretty Colors
On the way to school last week I went to heat my car up and got these beautiful sunrise shots. Its amazing what one can see if they just open their eyes. My instructor is telling us to really look at your surroundings. I saw my neighbors leaving at the same time but I was the only one with a camera, I wondered if they even looked up.
Creative Shoot
Today's assignment was to pick one subject and shoot it 36 different ways, our instructors want to see our creative side. I picked a cemetery because today had a cloudy start and my mood was somber. I decided to go to Historical Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, I had never been there before. It turned out to be a great day, by the time I got there the sun came out and gave me light. I also brought my digital and took some personal shots.
Patrick Hoelck
I really enjoyed listening to Patrick Hoelck's beginning and his love for art. He talks about Polaroids and how he started making music videos. He's really interesting.

Ansel Adams
Ms. Finch talked to us about burning and dodging. I have yet to attempt it in the dark room though. She also talked to us about Ansel Adams. I found a book at my moms house of his portfolios, they are amazing. She ended up giving me the book because she saw how much I liked it. What an amazing talent he had.
Confusion
So I have really had a hard time understanding depth of field. My instructor Ms. Harkins explained it to us last week, and I was completely confused. We learn more about it tomorrow but I also found a website that helped me understand depth of field more.
Lisette Model
I was at the doctors offices today and read an article about photography. One of the quotes was by Lisette Model, "Photography is probably the easiest art form, which perhaps makes it the hardest". I remember Mr. Jones talking about her. This is one of my favorite images by her.

Foliage
Enjoying the fall foliage. I love this time of year but its so cold. I took this shot at Tallulah Gorge. Its so beautiful to see all the colors.
Interview
Interview is one of my favorite magazines. Its filled with fashion, art, and film. I love the articles. This month I enjoyed reading about Natalie Portman, the article was written by Jake Gyllenhaal. Also this month there was some great fashion spreads. It really gives me inspiration.

Chinese Photography
Over the weekend I went to a photography opening. Atlanta Celebrates Photography(ACP)s festival guide along with my course instructor Ms. Harkins informed me of the show. Hometown: Post-Documentary Chinese Photography gave me a look into Chinese culture. I was able to ask the photographers questions (with the help of their interpreters) and it was awesome being able to interact with them. I'm glad I had the opportunity to go.

Be Productive
This rain is really bothering me. I can't go out and shoot. Its a good learning lesson for the rest of my schooling, DON'T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. BE PRODUCTIVE. The weather is so unpredictable. Better that I learn that now rather than later.
Depth of Field
In class today we talked about depth of field. It was really confusing. I think I'll grasp a better understanding about it when I actually shoot for it. Trying to think of places I can shoot for this.

Learning Experience
Today was busy. I'm a little overwhelmed with how much time I will be spending in the darkroom in the coming weeks, but I'm loving every bit of it. I don't know much about film, I'm used to digital. With every class I'm learning something new whether it be from my instructors, upper class men, or my peers.
Lab Day
Lab was fun today. I did my first contact sheet. It took me awhile to get it right. I'm sure I will go through a lot of paper this quarter.

Tallulah Gorge
Over the weekend I shot some of my favorite things for a burn and dodge assignment. I went to Tallulah Gorge. Its so pretty. My legs are killing me though, there is over 1000 steps to go down into the gorge. Its easy to go down those steps but to come back up is horrible. Anything to get a good shot.

Rain Rain Go Away
Im a little disapointed today because its raining. I wanted to take pictures for my bracketing assignment, they have to be taken outside. I was going to go to my friends pumpkin patch and then the park. Well maybe it will let up. Trying to be hopeful.

Busy Weekend
This weekend was great. I got to go do a lot of shooting. I wanted to get a head start on some of my photo assignments. A few of my assignments are to take pictures of my favorite things and bracketing. I also took some shots for a coworker, she just had a baby.
